The so-called " Indian grass " {Andro- pogon nardus), which covers extensive tracts in Ceylon, yields, on distillation with steam, an essential oil, which owes its name to the fact that it contains a large pro- portion of the compound citronellal. This oil, being exceedingly cheap, is used in enormous quantities for scenting common soaps, and in the manufacture of coarse scents, and is also added as an adulterant to more expensive oils. 

Aromatherapy : Citronella often goes unnoticed in the realm of aromatherapy oils. It holds warming and activating attributes that resonate on biological levels. The essential oil extracted from Citronella has the remarkable ability to uplift mood, while simultaneously offering a gentle touch to the skin and aiding in controlling excessive perspiration, particularly beneficial for foot care. Antiseptic & disinfectant : Citronella grass are used for the production of citronella oil which is used in soaps, as a mosquito repellent in insect sprays , candles and also in aromatherapy, which is famous in Britain, Indonesia. Besides oil production, citronella grass is also used for culinary use, such as in tea.The oil is used externally as an insect repellant. The application of this oil extends to alleviating headaches, migraines, and symptoms associated with rheumatism. It can be used as an antiseptic and to sanitize kitchen counters and chopping blocks. When it is diffused in a room, the scent repels insects and bugs. Its antiseptic properties prove beneficial in combating colds and influenza.
